Hot Diggity Dog - The Buffalo Dog

Blue Cheese Dressing. Texas Pete's Hot Sauce.

I have a long history of being a total baby when it comes to spicy food. Hot sauce is not really my "thing" so it was with this dog (and about 4 others on the menu) that I had a considerable amount of apprehension. I don't eat Buffalo wings too often, and if I do I prefer them to be extra mild...  I used to eat them though, so I can appreciate what they are trying to do here with this - The Buffalo Dog.

Blue cheese and hot wings. Another very well known flavor combination. Hot sauce needs blue cheese. Our mouths just need a break sometimes. Some people don't even bother with the blue cheese and celery that accompany virtually every hot wing ever... People, you are missing out. Go ahead and burn your mouths out with suicide wings or ghost peppers or whatever, but when it comes to Buffalo wings, the blue cheese is the oft overlooked third ingredient. The hot sauce alone on the dog would just be too much, of course Texas Pete's isn't really a major contender in the hottest sauce in the world competition, but it is a hot sauce, and just hot sauce on a hot dog would be too much... The blue cheese comes to the rescue and mellows out the burn of the hot sauce and brings out the complex flavors therein, never once sacrificing itself in the process. The pungent taste of blue cheese still resonates, but balances perfectly with the hot bite of Texas Pete. Put all of that on top of a Vienna Beef hot dog, and we have ourselves a winner.
Whats left is an absolutely delicious hot dog, that, much like the Philadelphia dog, proves what great things can be done with only a few key ingredients.

Now a word about the rolls.
I have not talked about the rolls much here, they are steamed poppy seed rolls, in case you were wondering. All of the hot dogs at HDD are served on steamed poppy seed rolls. They are rolls. They are vehicles that help us to transport the hot dog and all of its toppings from the table to our mouths. Depending on the ingredients placed inside the hot dog of your choice the bun either holds up and does this job well, or... doesn't. I have found (and a monkey could also find) that the wetter the ingredients are going into the hot dog, the less time it takes for the roll to just give up on life and leave you stranded with what industry types call "a mess".

This Buffalo Dog is A MESS. One of the most delicious messes I have ever encountered, mind you, but a mess nonetheless. You have an inadvertent time limit on this thing. Its made with wet hot sauce and wet blue cheese dressing, this hot dog WANTS to fall apart in your hands... And that got me thinking. There are 2 major eating competitions here in the US, I mean the really big ones, the Hot Dog eating contest sponsored by Nathans that takes place in Coney Island every July 4th, and the WING BOWL which takes place in Philadelphia on the weekend of the Super Bowl. What HDD has done is combine BOTH into one hot dog, not saying that you need to eat 42 of these things in a row, but if you want to stay clean, you better eat it FAST. (but you know, listen to your mother -- chew your food, be careful)
Maybe its the mess thats also part of the fun. If I ever do eat Buffalo wings, I certainly don't do it IN PUBLIC...

For a reason.

  1. I am starving for hot wings..and hot dogs, now. both are...well hot. I think I am ready to give HotDiggityDog a second go of it, now with the taste of my previous visit out of my mouth (and colon). Hot wings and blue cheese dressing and celery is a flavor combo I often crave. On pizza, in a salad, as a cheesy katie dip, so on a hot dog WHY THE HELL NOT? in fact bring it. in fact i am going right now.....................

but wait. first a quick note.

  2. THAT is why I always eat Hot Diggity Dog with a knife and fork :) One of my favorite places to visit in Lancaster, and why spend $20 for a meal at Ruby Tuesdays when you can go here?

My favorites are the blue cheese one, the Texan, and most of all the Chicago. Nice site layout by the way. Are you going to go through their entire menu before moving onto another restaurant?

  3. @ the count - my original intent here was just that- to write about their entire menu and then move on to another restaurant... however, some changes to that plan must be made... not that I am bored with or in any way "done" with Hot Diggity Dog, but I feel that in order to keep a constant interest in the blog and to keep things fresh, I will begin "jumping around" to other places, every once in a while going back to HDD for something else off of their menu (they do have quite a decent sized menu, that keeps getting bigger). This way its not just hot dog review after hot dog review for the casual reader of the blog. And I can shine the spotlight on a number of different places more easily.

Also, thanks for your compliment about the layout... it is however just a simple blogspot layout, which I feel somewhat confined to now that I have some different ideas of things I want to do with the site.. know anybody that knows anything about HTML? is blogspot HTML easily modified?

And ps - that Texan dog scares the bejeezus out of me.
